Jack was raised in Buchanan, Michigan before moving west by 1890 into Billings, Mt. & Wyoming; where he resided in Lovell, and Worland. He did not marry, and his headstone was placed in 2014 by Eugene O. Godfrey, who remembered Jack in 1925 as a family friend. Jack was a rancher and foreman before he worked in Mr. Joseph O. Godfrey's menswear store in Lovell Wyoming. The tree honors Jack's membership in the American Woodsmen, the latin inscription Dum Tacet Clamet is the Woodsmen motto, meaning "Though Silent, he speaks".
