Joseph Shelby (Famous) LEFORS

Willow Grove Cemetery
Johnson County,
Wyoming

Birth: Feb. 20, 1865 in Paris, Lamar County, Texas
Death: Oct. 1, 1940 in Buffalo, Johnson County, Wyoming

LeFors served in several law enforcement capacities, but is most famous for extracting a drunken confession from Tom Horn while he had a newspaper reporter secretly eavesdropping and recording Horn's confession. He used the confession to convict and hang Tom Horn for the killing of fifteen-year-old Willie Nickell.

The confession would not be allowed in court today. Tom Horn was a killer and deserved to be hung, but there is serious doubt thatbhe killed Willie.
